Christmas

I led Sabbath School at my school this morning :) It’s something I really enjoy doing, there’s not that many people, there’s more time and it has a very relaxed and cozy feel. As it’s getting close to Christmas I wanted to do mine about the holiday but not in the same way as we’ve heard before. In summary:

I found it very interesting that the beginning of Matthew, the christmas story and the entire New Testament starts with begats! It is Christ’s lineage, many completely skip this part but surely it wouldn’t have been included if it wasn’t important. The lineage of Christ is of the upmost importance. In the Old Testament there are countless prophecies about the lineage of Christ and of Christ’s birth. He had to be from the line of Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David to name a few. If one wanted to prove to be the Messiah they had to be able to prove that they had the right prophecied lineage.  Two interesting things are that Christ actually had the right lineage on both sides, Mary’s and Joseph’s and that in 70 A.D. the Jewish temple which stored all records was destroyed. Because it was destroyed if someone else claimed to be the Messiah they would not have been able to prove their lineage so it had to have been Jesus. Without the first 17 verses proving that Christ was the Messiah there would have been no point to the rest of the book. One has to know for sure that Christ is the Messiah before reading about his life.

Anyways long story short, when Christ came he fulfilled promises God had made in the past. My point was we learn to trust people by seeing what they’ve done in the past. Because Christ fulfilled promises for the past we know that he will fulfill ones for the future. Christmas should be a time when we reflect on promises Christ fulfilled in the past and know the promises that Christ will fulfill for us in the future.

We then made a promise tree where we decorated a Christmas tree in handmade paper ornaments which read promises that Christ has made to us. Then we put a glowing star on top, it is a symbol of the light of the world, Christ fulfilling the promises below. I gave everyone a paper promise tree listing some of the many promises that Christ made to us.

I’m going to be posting scripture of God’s promises now so that you can reflect on them for Christmas :)
